Recut, Reframe, Recycle
The Center for Social Media recently conducted a study entitled "Recut, Reframe, Recycle: Quoting Copyrighted Material in User-Generated Video" by Center director Pat Aufderheide and Peter Jaszi, co-director of the law school’s Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property. The study asks the question (so reminiscent of what the music industry is enduring with the "mash-up" or "bastard pop" phenomenon): When college kids make mashups of Hollywood movies, are they violating the law?
